The largest ski resort in Honshu Island’s Tohoku region, Appi Kogen receives many international visitors and roughly 8 meters of snowfall per season — and that’s after the snow has been compressed by groomers. Though its 21 runs are best suited for intermediate skiers, Appi Kogen also supplies terrain for beginners and experts, meaning that riders of all ability levels can share the slopes here.
Off the resort, you can access some deep powder and tree skiing in Appi Kogen’s backcountry, though you’ll need to pony up some extra cash for an additional snowcat ticket. With so many great groomed courses available, you’ll have to decide for yourself whether the powder is worth it. But if you do choose to venture out of bounds, you’ll be rewarded by gorgeous mountain views and pillowy off-piste runs that can keep you busy well into the evening.
When it’s time to leave the slopes at the end of the day, Appi Kogen is highly family- and English-friendly. There are indoor and outdoor activities that kids will love (the Appi Family Snow Park, with snow-tubing and sledding, is a must-visit for anyone traveling with little ones) and restaurants that will appeal to even the pickiest of eaters. And due to its renown as an international destination, many folks in and around Appi Kogen speak English, making for an easy experience in navigating around the resort.

STAY
Rest and refuel
Unlike most Japanese ski areas, Appi Kogen doesn’t feature a typical village — it’s a resort rather than a town. But that doesn’t mean you’ll have trouble finding places to stay. Two luxury hotels, the ANA Crowne Plaza and the ANA Intercontinental Appi Kogen Resort, dominate the resort base and provide ski-in-ski-out convenience. There are a couple more Western hotels in the area, but if you want more authentic Japanese accommodations, the nearby town of Hachimantai boasts a variety of more traditional inns about 10 kilometers from the ski slopes. Also just down the road, the Appi pension village has a few more small-scale lodgings available.
EAT
Enjoy international dining
If you’re hoping to go bar-hopping after the ski slopes close, you might be disappointed by the area’s lack of nightlife. But don’t rule out Appi Kogen just yet; you can still find some great places to grab a meal and a drink or two here. The Crowne Plaza tops Appi Kogen’s dining scene, with five different restaurants spanning a variety of cuisines: Korean, Chinese, Western, and, of course, Japanese. Aside from the Crowne Plaza, other resort hotels in the area also have highly rated restaurants, as does the Appi pension village.
